Pre-Independence Day Celebrations

The Guatemalan Independence day is September 15th. Unlike in the U.S., Guatemala celebrates its independence for an entire week before the actual day. To celebrate, the kids of Colegio Shalom have half-days of school this week, where they participate in cultural activities designed to mark their independence from Spain in 1821. Students gather in assembly in the first photo below. Some of them hold blue flags and others hold white, to represent the blue and white flag of Guatemala. In the second photo, Clara Luz models the native dress of Guatemalan women. In the third and fourth photos, school children display the Guatemalan flag and sing the (very long!) national anthem. In the final photo, sophomores and juniors read important facts about the Guatemalan fight for independence.
