Changes

There have been lots of changes here at the orphanage during the last two weeks. We were pleased to find out that Director Jorge Mario isn't afraid to make staff changes when he finds it necessary. Two house parents have been replaced in the last week because Jorge Mario believed that they were not giving their all to their children. Last week, the teenage boy's house mother was replaced by a couple who used to house parent them. Yennifer and Walter will be a great addition to the teen boys' home and have already made great strides in making the house cleaner and more homey. Additionally, the house mother for the boys age 6 - 9 will tomorrow be replaced by a legendary Casa Shalom house parent - Marina. Marina used to work here at Shalom as a house mother but left to take care of her ill mother. Everyone raves about what a stellar house mother she was and tomorrow, she's returning to care for the little boys. A third piece of news is that yesterday, Casa Shalom received it's first new child in nearly a year. A 14-year-old girl named Clara Alicia was brought here yesterday with nothing but the clothes on her back. We don't know much about her background yet, but please keep Clara in your prayers as she adjusts to life at Casa Shalom.

It's a circus around here

A church group visited today and brought with them a group of clowns! It's beginning to look like a circus around here! They divided the kids up by age groups and ministered to them through music, clowns, drama and devotionals. Enjoy the photos and video below: left - Sonia and Jose Ramiro pose with the clowns. Lights, camera, soccer!

Thanks to a donation from a group in Tennessee, we were able to purchase and install flood lights at the most popular place at Casa Shalom - the soccer field! Here are photos of a recent ceremony we held, giving thanks for the new lights that allow the kids to play soccer after dark, which is about 6:00 p.m. here. In the left photo, director Jorge Mario leads a prayer of thanks for the new illumination. The school year ends soon here and the kids are planning all sorts of late-night soccer tournaments. The new rule - lights out at 10:00!

Friday's Featured Child

This Friday's Featured Child is Colim Graciela Beb Salguero. Colim is 9-years-old and says that her favorite color is bright pink. She loves to play with Barbie dolls and stuffed bears in her free time. Colim is in the 4th grade and says her favorite subject is math. Colim has two brothers at Casa Shalom - Marvin is 11 and Vinicio is 13. Colim is excitedly waiting for a sponsor to choose her - she can't wait to practice her letter-writing skills!

Colim lives at Casa Shalom because her fathered abondoned her family and her mother turned to dealing drugs to support them. She didn't care for her 3 kids, but let them roam freely in the garbage dump next door to their home. Colim needs special love and prayers from a sponsor because this will likely be a difficult holiday season for her and her brothers - last Christmas, her mother, aunts and cousins were murdered during a drug-related home invasion. Her relatives were shot as the family gathered around the dinner table and Colim and her brothers saw the whole incident. Please consider making a difference in Colim's life by becoming her sponsor! For $30 per month, you can provide Colim with improved food, medical care, medicine, school supplies, needed clothes and shoes, recreational trips outside the orphanage and other item's vital to her development. More importantly, your letters and prayers can help show Colim your love and the love of Jesus. If you are interested in sponsoring Colim or her brothers, please visit the Sponsorship Program website: http://www.sponsorachildatcasashalom.blogspot.com/ or email us at TheHansonsinGuatemala@gmail.com
